Creating a Safe Bedroom Environment
Your bedroom should be a sanctuary of rest and safety, designed to minimize risks during vulnerable moments like getting in and out of bed or navigating in the dark. Falls frequently occur in bedrooms during nighttime trips to the bathroom or when getting up too quickly in the morning. Creating a safe bedroom environment requires attention to furniture placement, lighting, and accessibility of essential items.
Position your bed so it is easy to get in and out from either side, with clear pathways on both sides. Keep a clear unobstructed path from the bed to the bathroom. A bedside table with a lamp, phone charger, water bottle, and space for medications ensures everything you need at night is within arm’s reach. A bed rail can provide valuable support when getting up during the night. Choose a mattress that is firm enough to provide support but not so high that getting in and out is difficult.
Use a nightlight or motion activated light between the bedroom and bathroom so you never need to navigate in complete darkness. Keep a cordless phone or mobile phone on your bedside table. Consider wearing a medical alert pendant to bed so help is always within reach even at night. Remove any clutter or loose rugs from the bedroom floor. Keep a flashlight in your bedside drawer for power outages. These simple modifications create a safer sleeping environment.
