Setting Up Your Home Recovery Space
After a hospital stay or surgery, your home environment plays a crucial role in your recovery speed and success. Creating a well organized recovery space before you come home can significantly reduce stress, prevent complications, and promote faster healing. The goal is to have everything you need within easy reach and minimize the physical demands on your body during the vulnerable recovery period when your strength and mobility may be limited.
Designate a recovery area on the main floor of your home to completely eliminate the need to climb stairs during your initial recovery days. Arrange a comfortable chair or recliner with good back support for daytime resting, with a small table nearby for water, medications, phone, remote controls, books, and snacks. Keep essential items including your phone charger, reading glasses, tissues, and a notebook for tracking symptoms and questions for your doctor within arm’s reach at all times.
Prepare or arrange for meals in advance by stocking the freezer with prepared meals, setting up a meal delivery service, or coordinating with friends or family members to bring food. Arrange for someone to check on you daily, either in person or through a scheduled phone call. Keep a list of emergency contacts and your doctor’s phone number visible. Set up any medical equipment like a walker, commode, or oxygen concentrator before you arrive home so everything is ready when you need it.
